Armanet and Sardou
But certainly not Romeo and Juliet (as in the illustration, work by Franck Bernard Dicksee -1884). These two are not ready to die for each other!
A sterile controversy if ever there was one, the one outlined by the singer shows that she understood nothing.
Can we appreciate Sardou’s songs without necessarily idolizing the character? The answer is yes. Especially since the performer articulates correctly, has a strong voice and the texts and music are perfectly written. Catchy. Not unpleasant to listen to at all. The character, completely French, makes me smile. Beret and baguette. Grumpy, but certainly loyal in friendship. Of one room. All round.
The criticism coming from a singer, somewhat mannered, with whom you rather have to listen carefully to understand what she is saying over feeble music that will put you to sleep, there is reason to be astounded. Especially since, when the words are finally heard, we do not always understand their relevance. She feels that it is coming, but we are still waiting for the conclusion (“I feel you coming” – Juliette Armanet).
In short, there’s not much more to say about it, except that if you want to listen to a real singer, the only Juliette I know is the one in the video below. Text and music not formatted in Garageband, Bitwig, Audacity or other composition software….
